Pros and cons of buying Squarespace templates?

In this blog, I take a deep dive into the pros and cons of buying a Squarespace website template.

Firstly, what exactly is a Squarespace template, kit or theme? Regardless of what you call it, a Squarespace template/kit/theme is a website designed by a third-party professional designer [just like myself] to help you easily build your new website yourself. You then choose a design (ie template/kit/theme), customise it to suit your brand and launch your new website! My step-by-step tutorials show you exactly how to do it. It’s so quick, easy AND affordable!

Squarespace Pros and Cons

PROS

  • A cost-effective solution over a custom website design

  • Faster turnaround than waiting for a custom website to be designed and built

  • Choose the template and customisable it to suit your brand and business

  • Quick and easy DIY to update the content anytime

  • You have complete control and ownership of the website

CONS

  • This is a DIY install so a small amount of dedicated time and effort is required on your part

  • It’s a template so there is a limit to how much you can customise it

  • You don’t have the 1:1 professional designer support that you would with a custom design

Who should use a Squarespace template?

I often recommend using a Squarespace website template when you are just starting your business or in the first year or two.

Why?

Your business will change and evolve so much in the first year - much of which you won’t be able to plan for - and as your business grows, a template allows you to easily update the website yourself and in a fast, cost-effective way.

I guarantee there will be a need to tweak and change the content as your business grows. One of the key advantages of using a Squarespace website template means you can easily make those changes yourself. This ensures you have a website that speaks to your audience and works for you and your business.

If you invest thousands of dollars into a custom website design and build from the outset, this could potentially be a waste of your money as the designer will need to make all content changes and updates on your behalf. This will be costly and could take a week or two or more for the designer to take action depending on how busy the designer is with other clients’ projects.

Another factor to consider when starting a new business is that you will have fewer resources and less money to invest in a custom-designed website, so you may need a flexible solution that you can have complete control over.

For most small businesses, this is where a website template works best.
